Reason for Becoming a Doctor and Education

Dr. Ben Dirkx became a doctor so that he could help people recover and be free from pain. He loves practicing medicine because he gets to participate in a challenging speciality, and he learns new things everyday.

He received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and participated in intramural sports activities. He attended school at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University with a focus on muscle and joint pathology. He completed his residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at William Beaumont Hospital and received training in interventional pain procedures.

Working for Spanish Hills Interventional Pain Specialists

Dr. Dirkx has worked for Spanish Hills Interventional Pain Specialists for over 7 years. His specialties include treatment for musculoskeletal conditions ranging from common knee issues to chronic back pain.

He spends time getting to know his patients, building relationships and trying to determine the reason behind their pain. “As long as they don’t give up on me, I won’t give up trying to help them get better”, says Dr. Dirkx. He works as hard as he can to find a solution and treatment for a patient, no matter what.

Dr. Dirkx specializes in spinal conditions, chronic pain, and neuropathic pain. One thing that his patients have taught him is patience. He has become more patient not only in his professional life, but his personal life as well. He describes himself as personable, genuine and a good listener. He deeply cares about his patients and wants to help them get out of pain.

When Dr. Dirkx is not Practicing Medicine

In his free time, Dr. Dirkx enjoys participating in competitive bike races, ice hockey and taking care of his dog, Khaleesi. He is married and enjoys spending time outdoors. He volunteers at Santa Barbara City College and Santa Maria Rodeo.

Dr. Dirkx spent time traveling in college and took a 3 week backpacking expedition in Denali, Alaska. Denali is the highest mountain peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,310 feet above sea level. He was away from family and friends with no connection to the outside world during this time. He feels like this experience shaped who he is today and made him appreciate life and understand what you really want.

The Doctors at Spanish Hills Interventional Pain Specialists

Dr. Dirkx describes the group of doctors at Spanish Hills Interventional Pain Specialists as collaborative and innovative. They work together to find solutions for their patients and they all provide input when necessary.

He is the most caring Doctor I have ever met. I have multiple problems and he shows respect and dignity for every one of them. I have not met a doctor yet that does that except his staff. I go Dr. Dirkx office and he lays it out one problem by one and if I need him to stop because I don’t understand, he waits. He cares that much for my well being.
