Lumbar Radiculopathy (Sciatica)

Nerve roots are the connection between the spinal cord and the body. If one of these nerve roots is injured, it will send a message to the particular region of the body. The message sent are the symptoms the patient feels such as numbness, pain, or a tingling sensation.

Three different injuries in the lumbar region cause injury to these nerve roots. A Herniated Disc occurs when a spinal disc ruptures, thus causing the nerve root to be pinched. When the bones outlining the spinal cord grow inward, the nerve roots are pinched. This is type of injury is called a Spinal Stenosis. Degenerative Disc Disease is the pinching of the nerve roots from the weakening of a spinal disc. The vertebral bones above and below the spinal cord press the nerve roots causing the pinch.
