Patrick Buchanan, M.D.

Reason for Becoming a Doctor and Education

Dr. Patrick Buchanan’s passion for medicine and helping others began at a young age. He was born and raised in Orange County, California and looked up to his father who also is a physician. His father taught him a lot about what it meant to be a doctor, and the value in building relationships with his patients. Dr. Buchanan’s drive for practicing medicine comes from a desire to improve the quality of life in his patients and allow them to live a life free from pain.

His enthusiasm for sports medicine developed during his early years of playing tennis and watching sports. He received a tennis scholarship and his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and medical degree from St. George’s University.

He worked as an intern in Brooklyn at Long Island College Hospital, attended his residency in New Jersey at Rutgers University/Kessler, and came back full circle to Loma Linda, CA. At Loma Linda University he completed his fellowship program in Pain Medicine. After he finished his fellowship program, he began his private practice career at Spanish Hills Interventional Pain Specialists. Dr. Buchanan is double board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine.

Working for Spanish Hills Interventional Pain Specialists

Dr. Buchanan has been practicing medicine for over 10 years, although he says it doesn’t feel like it’s been that long! He has proudly worked at Spanish Hills Interventional Pain Specialists for over 5 years and is thrilled to be part of such a renowned team. He previously published an article titled “Interventional Treatments for Sacroiliac Joint” in the current Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Reports Journal. He serves as a principal investigator in several research studies involving spinal cord stimulation and sacroiliac joint fusion.

His specialties include spinal cord stimulation, PRP/stem cell injections, minimally invasive pain procedures, and conservative and restorative treatments. His office focuses on ultrasound guided procedures in sports medicine and pain management as well as multifidus dysfunction/chronic lower back pain. Dr. Buchanan has been one of the pain physicians for the Dallas Cowboys summer training camp in Oxnard, CA.

Dr. Buchanan has always loved working with his patients, and makes an effort to develop relationships with each of them. He makes it a point to listen to them, understand what their goals are, and develop a treatment plan together. One thing he wishes he could tell all his patients is, “Chronic pain is just like any other health issue, such as diabetes. It takes time to improve, and often involves a lot of hard work to change your lifestyle in order to improve your pain. You have to keep up with your treatment and physical rehab in order to get better, just like with other health conditions.” His goal is to help his patients get their life back by managing their pain and focus on things they love and enjoy.

When Dr. Buchanan is Not Practicing Medicine

He likes to practice what he preaches, and makes sure to exercise frequently. He enjoys playing tennis and beach volleyball. He considers himself to be passionate, hard-working, and optimistic. He is married with a young son, Kai, and enjoys spending time with his family and being outdoors. He believes that family always comes first. He feels fortunate that he has an opportunity to be with his family on the weekends, spending time doing things they love such as going to the beach, or hiking.
