Medial Branch Block

Medial branch blocks are performed as a diagnostic tool. This will help determine if a spinal facet joint is the causing pain. An injection is used to block the nerves of the spinal facet that may be causing the pain.

A fluoroscope will be used while the patient lies flat on their stomach. A numbing agent will be given to numb the area.

A doctor will insert a needle into the proper area. A contrast dye will be used to determine the correction location of the needle and will allow the physician to see the affected area.

A medication will be injected to block pain signals. If the pain improves right after the initial injection, another injection may be given to provide long term relief. If pain continues after the injection, then another site may be tested.
